AEW Double or Nothing 2024 Review

AEW

In this event, there was double the carnage and nothing was safe

Just when I thought wrestling in 2024 couldn’t get any better, AEW goes and knocks my socks off with an electric Double or Nothing extravaganza. It may be one of the best events I’ve ever seen. Not even kidding. This was an epic way to celebrate 5 years of AEW’s incredible presence in the world of wrestling - and what an awesome 5 years it has been.

The event took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and the crowd were amazing throughout the whole show. They scored themselves a treat, because so much of the action spilled out into the arena, and they got to see it going on in the aisles, the hallways, and at the stands. Not surprising for an Anarchy in the Arena match, though!

It’s hard to know where to start from all of the incredible matches, but I know I have to first give props to Mercedes Mone (aka Sasha Banks in WWE) for her spectacular return to the ring after a long time missing from the USA scene. She was in brilliant form, and I especially thought her intro was amazing. It was great to see a female wrestler in AEW get the focus that they have long been deserving, and I can’t wait to see more of this representation.

The next big ‘wow’ moment of the event was the confrontation between Adam Cole and MJF. There’s been a lot of beef between the two, and for a moment it seemed like all had been forgiven. But that was definitely not the case. MJF, after hugging Cole, delivered him a swift kick to the groin and then a brain buster to clear him out of the ring. After this, MJF took the moment to declare his loyalty to AEW and his intention to achieve GOAT status. I should note, MJF was wearing Triple H’s old jacket while saying this, too, which was a total flex in itself. Huge stuff!

Another honourable mention goes to Adam Copeland and Malakai Black who went head to head in one of the gnarliest Barbed Wire Cage Matches I have ever seen. It was gory, painful, and hard to watch. Even the commentators seemed completely shocked by it all.

Now to the main event. Holy cow, what a show, right from the the start. For this match, Young Bucks (aka Nicholas and Matt Jackson), The Rainmaker (Kazuchika Okada), and The Scapegoat (aka Jack Perry) went up against Team AEW, which includes American Dragon (aka Bryan Danielson), FTR (aka Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) and Darby Allin. I don’t even know where to start. There was chaos throughout the entire venue, a van crash was involved, there were exploring chairs, face masks with thumb tacks, giant poker chips getting snapped in half by people’s bodies, and even someone getting strung up in the air and kicked in the face with thumb tack covered shoes. Mayhem! However, star of the show was the flamethrower that Darby Allin brought out and used to SET JACK PERRY ON FIRE. Yes, you read that correctly. He set him on fire. It was madness. Tony Khan struck it lucky, as he was able to get out of the way just in time, after being pulled away from the gorilla position. I don’t think he signed up for getting set on fire, but I’m not sure anyone does to be honest. That said, Allin paid for his sins when he was the one suspended in the air by Young Bucks later on, ending what was one of the most insane main events I’ve ever seen. Bucks, Rainmaker and Scapegoat definitely earned that win, but Team AEW gave it a red hot go.

Man, if AEW keeps delivering this type of quality, they will really earn back their name as a worthy competitor to WWE. This sort of event has gone back to their roots, and I know for a fact that this is what the fans have been hoping for. If WWE isn’t careful, they’ll need to watch out, as this is the level of quality that the world is expecting now, and they need to make sure they keep their events exciting and their productions just as amazing as this.

I’ll tell you what though, it’s been a bloody brilliant year to be a wrestling fan!

I give this match 5 out of 5 stars:
