AEW Dynamite Match Review: 16 September 2023
Four former champions fighting for a chance at glory
This week’s World Title Eliminator Match in Cincinnatti, Ohio, saw four former champions of AEW battle it out for a chance at the Female World Championship next week.
Dr Britt Baker D.M.D. was a relative local favourite for this match, hailing from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, just a state border hop away. She was joined in the ring by the Marilyn Monroe-eqsue Toni Storm, the beast Nyla Rose, and the nimble Hikaru Shida. Despite the stakes, it would have been good to see a bit more hype from the local crew in support of Dr Britt.
The ladies started out scrappy, throwing punches liberally and not hesitating to take a hit at whoever crossed their paths. One of my early highlights was when Hikaru Shida jumped from the ring and landed a crossbody hit onto all three of the other ladies at once who were outside ring. It definitely took them all time to regroup at certain points it seemed.
It was interesting to see the personality dynamics play out. For instance there was a moment where Toni Storm and Nyla Rose were teaming up, seemed like besties, and then went straight into going up against each other right away.
The match kept on going back and forth between the wrestlers, with each taking control of things at one point or another. Another highlight was when Nyla chokeslammed Dr Britt, only for Shida to then take Nyla out with a Katana Kick.
In the end, Toni Storm took out the win in impressive form, going from completely out of it in the corner of the ring to a rebound roll up of Dr Britt until time was counted. This leaves Toni now lined up to face the her former teammate Saraya in New York City next week, the perfect place for this match and rivalry to play out.
